The new Weserstadion, where are training the German team Werder Bremen (northern Germany), bet on the concept of using photovoltaic panels integrated into the architecture quite bold in the renovation project, which begun in 2008. In addition to covering almost the entire roof with solar panels, they were also installed thin film modules on the south and east facade of the stadium, taking advantage of the full potential of irradiation to obtain electricity.
The whole are 200,000 solar cells, occupying an area equivalent to two football fields and will generate up to 840,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. With this, the stadium will no longer emit 450 tons of CO2 per year. This energy is enough to supply 250 homes for one year. The project was developed in partnership with the local concessionaire, the company EWE, which commercializes the power generated.
The Werder fans are encouraged to acquire solar energy generated at the stadium of the team of their heart. Those who adhere to the proposal, get a socket with the shield of the team to be placed in their home. So every time they look for the socket, they remember that the electricity which comes into their home comes from solar panels Weserstadion.
